The west ridge of Mt. Lowe connects the Upper Sam Merrill Trail and Mt. Lowe Road making the most direct route to get from Mt. Lowe to the upper trailhead for the Tom Sloane Saddle Trail. To get to it follow the Upper Sam Merrill Trail down until you reach a junction with a view pipe marked “Locating Santa Monica.”
Follow a faint hiker’s trail along the ridge. If you lose the trail, just stay on the ridge and you’ll pick it up again. It is a short trek and you will see Mt. Lowe road pretty quickly.
The hiker’s trail leads all the way down to Mt. Lowe Road.
