Route description with trail segment pages: From the trailhead, take the Lower San Gabriel Peak Trail to the first easy to hike down to connection with Mt. Disappointment Road (less than 1/10 of a mile to the where the trail meets the road). Follow Mt. Disappointment Road down to the trailhead for the hiker’s trail that leads up to Mt. Deception. After reaching the peak, the hiker’s trail will become fainter as is continues down the west ridge of Mt. Deception. If the trail becomes unclear, stay along the center of the ridge and continue going down. There is what looks like a wall from above of ceanothus and young oak trees. Follow the ridge down toward that wall of vegetation and an opening will become clear as you reach it. Keep heading straight down only veering to get around vegetation before returning directly to the center of the ridge until you reach the plateau. This sounds harder than it is. Retrace your steps back to the San Gabriel Peak Trail and head up to the short distance to Mt. Disappointment Road.  Proceed up Mt. Disappointment Road to the Saddle between Mt. Disappointment and San Gabriel Peak.  At the saddle, turn west (right) and follow Mt. Disappointment Road to Mt. Disappointment. Return to the saddle and proceed east to the end of the road and go down the trail leading off Mt. Disappointment Road and continue up past the junction with the South San Gabriel Peak Trail and follow the Upper San Gabriel Peak Trail to the peak. From the peak, follow the San Gabriel Peak trail back down the trailhead.
