Trailhead: Cloudburst Summit
Trail: Pacific Crest Trail to Cooper Canyon Falls, return via Winston Ridge and Winston Peak.
Description: Follow the Pacific Crest Trail down canyon crossing the dirt road about a mile along the trail and continue past the saddle on the north side of Winston Peak, past the unmarked junction with the north hiker’s trail around Bump 6903 (the small peak that shares the saddle with Winston Peak), past Cooper Canyon Campground to the junction with the Burkhart Trail. From there turn left and continue heading down past the top of Cooper Canyon Falls which will be visible on the left. An unmarked faint trail leading down to Cooper Canyon Falls appears a short distance beyond. Follow the trail down using the rope to reach Little Rock Creek in front of the falls. Return the same way until reaching the unmarked junction for the north hiker’s trail around Bump 6903. Take that trail around Bump 6903 and continue past the next saddle up to Winston Ridge. Return to the saddle with Bump 6903 and follow the trail on the right around the west side of Bump 6903 to the saddle with Winston Peak. [Note: there are some downed trees along the west side of Bump 6903 (as of 3-29-2017) which some hikers might find difficulty getting around or over. If this sounds unappealing, return to the PCT using the north hiker’s trail around Bump 6903 and follow the PCT to the saddle with Winston Peak]. At the saddle, follow the steep north hiker’s trail up to Winston Peak and return to Cloudburst Summit by taking the more gradual south hiker’s trail back down to the parking area.
