Trailhead: Red Box

Trail: Loop hike from Red Box to Valley Forge Campground to Mt. Lowe and San Gabriel Peak.

East Trailhead for the Gabrieleno Trail at Red Box.

Route Description: From the east parking lot at Red Box (T1 on Trailhead Page), follow the Gabrieleno Trail east and go left at the junction leading down to Valley Forge Campground. From Valley Forge Campground, return to the junction and head east once again until turning right and heading south up the Valley Forge Trail to Eaton Saddle. At Eaton Saddle, follow Mt. Lowe Road through Mueller Tunnel to the saddle between San Gabriel Peak and Mt. Markham. At the saddle, veer left off of the road and take the North Mt. Lowe Trail* to a clearly marked junction (with a metal sign with arrows to Mt. Lowe and Mt. Wilson). Follow the trail up to Mt. Lowe. Return the same way back to the saddle between San Gabriel Peak and Mt. Markham. Cross Mt. Lowe Road and veer left to take the South San Gabriel Peak Trail* up to a junction with the upper portion of the San Gabriel Peak Trail, turn right and head east up to San Gabriel Peak. From San Gabriel Peak, head back down and pass the junction with the South San Gabriel Peak Trail which will lead to a paved road. Follow the paved road a short distance and turn right and head down at the junction leading to Mt. Disappointment. Continue following the road down until you reach the lower portion of the San Gabriel Peak Trail (on the right, west) and follow that down to Mt. Wilson Road, turn left and take that back to Red Box.
