At the JCT with the Lower Sam Merrill Trail, continue straight to the White City Ruins at Echo Mountain. Take the Lower Sam Merrill Trail to the Cobb Estate.
Points of Interest: Lower Mt. Lowe Railway ruins, White City ruins at Echo Mountain.
The White City ruins at Echo Mountain and the ruins along the route of the Mt. Lowe Railway have several signs with historical photos telling the story of the resort that existed in the early 1900’s at Echo Mountain. There are remnants of the resort, the incline railway leading to it, and the electric railway leading from Echo Mountain to the Alpine Tavern near Inspiration Point. If you like ruins and history, this is an excellent destination.
To make the trek to the ruins and back more interesting, this hike requires a shuttle from two nearby trailheads. Starting from Millard Canyon and taking the Sunset Ridge Trail, the trek is interior focused composed mostly of canyon views. Returning by coming down the Lower Sam Merrill Trail, the views are outward to the city. On a clear day, Catalina Island can be easily seen.
